SAVE SINDHIYAT MOVEMENT

This 14th August 2011, exactly 64 years have passed since our own mother SINDH was snatched from us. Entire generation of exiled Sindhis is no more; next generation is on the verge of eclipse. Third generation consisting of young sindhis – supposed to take over the reins of responsibilities, is virtually cut off from the mainstream of SINDHIYAT. In such dismissal scenario, remaining Sindhi elders, born in Sindh, need to ponder intensively to give an in-depth and quick thought, to save our more than five thousand years old Sindhi civilization. Certainly, to save our “SINDHI IDENTITY” till eternity, we have to preserve “COMPLETE SINDHIYAT” composed of 5 elements: SINDHI LANGUAGE, SINDHI EDUCATION, SINDHI LITREATURE, SINDHI CULTURE and SINDHI ETHOS – mere spoken Sindhi is not sufficient.

SINDHI EDUCATION, the most important element, has virtually disappeared – Whatever remains off Sindhi education, are some Sindhi schools, and “Sindhi learning Centers” here & there. These also have miserably failed in their objective, inspite of putting in their best efforts. Lack of transparent utility and favourable environment prevents the students to practice by usage. Hence, after some time, Sindhi students forget all about acquired Sindhi education, leaving behind only the “Certificates”. One can imagine the fate of Sindhi Literature, in the absence of Sindhi education.

Being in miniscule minority everywhere, our Sindhis follow faithfully elders advice: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” (JAHIRO DES, TAHIRO VES) to renounce their own Sindhi culture, by adopting local cultures. How long, yearly ritual of CHETICHAND festival and cultural programs, shall keep our Sindhi culture alive?

Due to impact of non-Sindhi environment all around us, even Sindhi language educated elders, have got an illusion that speaking in sindhi is “ OUT OF FASHION” and they have started taking “PRIDE” in “NOT SPEAKING” in Sindhi language. When elders of our community are in such state of degradation, how to blame young Sindhis, who were denied the opportunity of getting Sindhi education by the shortsightedness of the Sindhi community. Not only this, due to “GLOBALIZATION”, importance and usage of English language has increased manifold. Under the influence of globalization, many Sindhis amongst us, are overactive in campaign to throttle Sindhiyat, rather to save it. According to them, Sindhis have now become “WORLD CITIZENS” and English is virtually their “mother tongue”. Under the circumstances these so called “MODERN SINDHIS” are advocating the adoption of “Roman Script” and translation of entire Sindhi literature into English.

Adverse effect of globalization is playing havoc not only on Sindhi language, but also on other languages, but, in their case, bad effect is limited mostly onto urban population, Moreover, rest of Indians have their own states, Where early education in mother tongue is compulsory. Hence, even after proficiency in English, favourable impact of mother tongue education, acquired in schools, doesn’t vanish completely. Besides, “Rural Area” of every state guarantees the preservance of their language, literature & culture till eternity. No doubt, we also need similar arrangements to protect all the five elements of our SINDHIYAT, narrated above.

The consensus among “learned dignitaries” and our own experience of last sixty four years, has undoubtedly proven, that for the preservance of language & culture, land below our feet, is a “MUST”. As such, the majority of Sindhi thinkers are gradually veering around the following consensus:-

“Without disturbing our present settlement of habitat & business, and without large scale exodus, we should develop a portion of territory as “NURSERY” to our Sindhiyat”. But, these thinkers are not aware, of the fact that besides our mainland Sindh, there is some territory within India also, which we can legitimately adopt.

Unfortunately, 99.9% Sindhis have not heard about the book with the title “Linguistic Survey of India” and 99.99% of those who know about this book, have not cared to read the same. In this book, clear demarcation of geographical territories of all Indian languages of undivided India, has been given. Sindhi Linguistic territory has also been shown in this book. Due to partition, a part of this territory has gone in Pakistan, and other part remains in India. This “Indian Part” of Sindhi Linguistic territory (S.L.T) is to be developed as NURSERY for the growth of SINDHIYAT.

The like minded supporters of the above proposition, have resolved to launch “SAVE SINDHIYAT MOVEMENT” under the auspices of “UNITED SINDHI FORUM, MUMBAI” (Whose Chairperson is Dadi Pushpa Advani). To make it peoples oriented movement, we have decided to open its units in each & every town, inhabitated by at least one hundred Sindhi families. Till date, we have 15 such units in Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Vadodara, Sangli, Bairagarh, Indore, Delhi, Agra, Lucknow, Jaipur, Thane, Gorakhpur & Varanasi.

We appeal to all our fellow Sindhis to spare some time for “Sindhi National Family” also, without ignoring in any way, their own families, and join this movement.
